HOW TO PICK THAT PERFECT RED LIPSTICK

The red lipstick is to beauty as the little black dress is to fashion. It is a classic that every woman should own. It is also a basic that comes in many versions, making it an exciting adventure to locate that perfect one to fit your makeup needs. To help your quest, here are two simple steps to finding your ideal match.
Step #1: Work With Your Skin Tone
Women with light skin tend to have blue undertones, which look best with shades of red that have an orange and coral cast. "They warm up the already cool tones of the skin," says makeup artist Sara Glick. Try: L’Oréal’s Colour Riche Lipcolour in Volcanic 410.
If you have medium skin with yellow undertones, reach for red lipsticks that have a pink or cranberry hue. Try: L'Oreal Colour Riche Anti-Aging Serum in Cranberry.
If you have medium skin with olive undertones, true reds, such as NARS Velvet Matte Lip Pencil in Cruella, look splendid.
When your skin is dark, brown-based reds work their magic. Try: Make Up For Ever Rouge Artist Intense in 44 - Satin Brownish Red.
Step #2:  Achieve Maximum Impact
Picking a red lipstick shade is only part of the fun. You also have many different finishes from which to choose and with which to experiment.
Stains, balms or glosses result in a more sheer application and wear for less time, whereas an emollient cream will last much longer and satin and matte reds will endure like iron.

THE SPRING BRIDE’S GUIDE TO LIP COLOR

Your spring wedding is finally here. You’ve painstakingly picked the perfect flowers, dresses, and accessories that coordinate with your fabulous spring color palette. But don’t forget the most important color of all: your lip color!
The right bridal lip color should not only be seasonally appropriate, but it should also photograph well, wear well, and most importantly, look great in person—and it can be difficult to find a color that makes the cut.
As a makeup artist, I have applied countless combinations of glosses, pencils, and lipstick to find the perfect color for my bridal clients. Even if they already have a great color in their arsenal, I like to find something a little bit different. Who wants to wear the same old lip color on your special day?
Here are my tips for picking the perfect spring shade on your big day.
Keep it cool
For the spring, I recommend using colors with cooler tones than you would in the summer or fall. Purple or blue toned pinks are my favorite in a creamy lipstick or gloss.
Here are my tried and true bridal spring lip colors:
  • Laura Mercier Crème Lip Colour in Dry Rose. Wear alone or topped with a light pink gloss for more shine.
  • Bobbi Brown Lip Gloss in Hot Pink. For a deeper look and more longevity, fill in your lips with M.A.C lip liner in Dervish.
  • Bobbi Brown Blue Raspberry Creamy Lip Color. Looks amazing on fair skin.

GET PRETTY FOR FASHION WEEK

Here's my complete breakdown below.
Hair
Relaxed, tousled waves say easy, breezy chic better than anything else, and look right whether you’re at a 9 a.m. show or a 9 p.m. party. Get the perfect beachy texture with a flat iron, and then mist with a light hair spray for all-day staying power.
Skin
Fresh, dewy skin is always perfectly on trend. And as the eyes will be dramatic, I’d go a little lighter on the face products than usual. A light dusting of bronzer (I like YSL Terre Saharienne Bronzing Powder) and the palest-pink blush, such as L’Oréal True Match Blush in Baby Blossom, is more than enough. If you want a subtle glow, also add a delicate swipe of highlighter (or plain old Vaseline) across your cheekbones.
Eyes
This is key to the look: a thick swipe of liquid liner in a dramatic shade. I’m loving the idea of a cobalt blue, such as Urban Decay 24/7 Waterproof Liquid Eyeliner in Radium. Starting at the center of your lids, swipe the liner toward the outer edges of your eyes, winging it out as much as you dare (I say go big!). Then start from the inner corner of your eyes to join the lines at the centers. Finish off with an ultra-lengthening mascara. Try: Lancôme L'Extrême Instant Extensions Lengthening Mascara.
Lips
It’s all about pale shine for this look. The Body Shop Lily Cole Hi-Shine Lip Treatment in Go Pink is just about perfect. If you apply it over a neutral liner (try Sue Devitt Lip Intensifier Pencil in Kirakira), your gloss will take you through New York Fashion Week from start to finish.

HAIR HOW-TO: GREEK INSPIRED HEADBAND ‘DO

Summer heat usually means pulling hair back into a ponytail. After all, it’s an easy way to stay cool and fight the inevitable frizz. But no longer. In our new Hair How-To series, we show you cute, wearable hairstyles that beat the heat in a sophisticated way.

Step 1: Start with hair that has some texture—second-day hair works great. Or, let hair air-dry to create some waves.

Step 2: Lightly place an elastic headband across your forehead and create some volume at the crown. For a chic but casual look, we used a braided leather headband from Remington.

Step 3: Begin by tucking the ends of your hair into the elastic band. If you have longer hair, grab a one inch piece at mid-length to create a loop and tuck into band. As you wind your way around, weave the ends into the headband. (Shoulder length hair neatly tucks into the headband without leaving any tails.)
Step 4: Continue looping and tucking hair into the headband until you reach the back of the band.
Step 5: If you have longer hair, you’ll likely end up with a few sections that need to be woven through the headband at the nape of your neck. Loop the ends into the headband two or three times. Secure the band and any loose loops with bobby pins.
Step 6: Mist your 'do with hairspray. L’Oréal Paris Elnett Satin Hold Hairspray with UV Filter is lightweight but strong, so your hair will stay in place without looking crunchy.

SHE NAILED IT: THE SWEETHEART MANICURE

If you're ready to take a break from dark polishes and edgier nail art, this girly-girl design combining pale gray, pink, stripes and a heart is just what the manicurist ordered.  Katrina Xiong of Katrina's Nail Blog, who created the look, tells us how to get it.

How to do it:
Step 1: Apply the base coat and two coats of gray polish on every nail except for your index finger.
Step 2: Apply two coats of pink polish to your index fingernails. Let your nails dry for a few minutes.
Step 3: Using the white nail polish, paint two thick stripes across your middle fingernails. Let the stripes dry.
Step 4: Using your paintbrush, place two dots of pink side by side in the center of your striped nails. Create the heart shape by connecting those two dots and extending the pink polish down into a point.
Step 5: Let the design dry for a few minutes. Then finish the look by applying the top coat.
Will you try this sweetheart manicure or would you rather stick to edgier looks?

Designers had models wearing floor length dresses in shades of yellows, greens and blues this year. Models were sporting dresses in chiffon that glittered with sequins and sparkled with jewels.
There were also a great many dresses in shades of white, fawn and cream this year at the Fashion shows for 2012. Models were wearing fitted knee length dresses with sleeveless cuts. The concept of a sleeveless lace bodice that ended in a swirling chiffon skirt was also launched at the ramp. Many models were wearing ankle length dresses with thigh high gashes in the front and a deep revealing cleavage that gives one the chance to show off your collar bones.
Designers had models wearing caftan like chiffon gown that revealed a sexy pair of legs and created swirls and hues of yellow around you. The next set of models in the fashion show was seen wearing burnt orange gowns and dress. One particular dress that caught my eye had a deep rectangular cut with no sleeves and a pencil skirt that hugged your thighs snugly. The dress was finished off with a thinly orange metallic belt. The belt added sparkle to the dress. One model was sporting a halter neck heavily beaded and sequined dress that hugged your body all the way to your ankles and also brought out your curves in an appealing manner.
The next color that Fashion Designers had introduced this year was emerald green in both silk and chiffon. Some of the fabric used had a shimmery texture while the other had silver thread weaved in it. The designer had women wearing loosely fitted ankle length dresses with just a thin belt encircling their waist to enhance their figure.
While many designers have introduced their clothing lines keeping only summer Fashion 2012 trends in their minds, some have introduced clothing lines for winter’s collection too. Fur coats and checkered coats have been much encouraged by various designers. Man and women both have been seen wearing fur coats in shades of grey and dirty brown with golfer’s caps adorning their heads.
Plum and orange colors have been encouraged by designers in the fashion industry for this season. Similarly, models and fashion freaks have been asked to wear huge shades this winter in purples and browns etc. Neck ties and bows have also been worn by fashion freaks this winter with the start of 2012.
